OLDER FAMILY MEMBER

As your family generally your Mum or Dad get's to the ages of 77+ that is the time to sit down with them and have a serious talk about are they going to move house or do you need to get the house ready for when they hit their 80's.

We are now expected to live longer health wise but mentally as you get older (so I am told by my older clients) your confidence goes, things give you more stress than they normally would have.

Over the recent months we have been doing appraisals for people in their 80's and its just not as easy for these senior's to grasp moving anymore its just so much to organise and its too daunting for them.

The only reason really that you should be thinking about moving is if your sleeping quarters are upstairs.  Stairs - what an issue for older people, its not the fact that you cant get up and down them because most of them do pretty good with that, its the possibility of them falling and if they break a hip or a leg it is just not going to heal that fast and then what do they do?

You can get gardeners, cleaners and home help all pretty easy stuff these days but you just cannot combat the stairs scenario.  This can be a very dangerous situation for seniors and although they are reluctant to leave stairs should be a definite no no passed the 70's.

When you get into your 80's its just too hard to move so those conversations need to be had well before then.

What about the people that have no family and they just refuse to accept they can no longer look after themselves - my heart really bleeds for these people its just such a hard conversation to have with someone that's not your family.
