Join the campaign: A fair go for landlords during COVID-19   Following the WA Government announcement regarding the extension of the Emergency Period for the Residential Tenancies (COVID-19 Response) Act 2020 to 28 March 2021, Council has approved a plan of action and we would encourage all members to download the letter at the link below and email it to your local member of parliament.  We also highly recommend that you download the draft landlord letter and email it to all your property owners and also encourage them to lobby their local member of parliament.   REIWA is extremely disappointed that the WA Government has disregarded the needs of landlords and the consultation from industry and extended the Emergency Period for all tenancies.   Hopefully with your assistance the government will take notice of our representations for the legislation to only apply to those who can demonstrate that they have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and are suffering ongoing hardship.  REIWA members have reported throughout the pandemic that approximately only one per cent of private tenancies have been unable to meet their full rental obligations, with repayment agreements in place for the majority.   The decision to extend the Emergency Period is short sighted and will create further problems for landlords and tenants when the Emergency Period ceases.   As the Perth vacancy rate has reached just 1.6 per cent, extending the ban on rental increases will see a sharp price correction down the track rather than small incremental increases, placing unfair pressure on tenants.   REIWA is calling on all members and investors to come together to show the WA Government that without investment, the housing ecosystem will collapse and therefore it is in the government’s best interest to support investment by implementing policy that is fair to both parties.   You can download the letter at the link below and email it to your local member of parliament, calling for urgent changes to the legislation that would see only those tenants still facing significant hardship covered under the Residential Tenancies (COVID-19 Response) Act 2020.   https://reiwa.com.au/members/about-us/advocacy/a-fair-go-for-landlords-during-covid-19/ MAKE YOUR OWN DECISIONS & GIVE IT A REAL GO!!
