MORTGAGE STRESS LEADS TO DIVORCE?

 We see it all the time a young couple that are working using both of their salaries to buy a home in their preferred area - instead of lowering their expectations they jump in with both feet and because they have been pre-approved up to $1,600,000, they go the whole hogg.

My feeling is that they should be going for something a bit less starting off with a villa or a townhouse that could house them all (one/two kids) as we all know that when kids come along so does the expenses.

Good planning, talking to your broker realistically about what you can manage is the best idea and then when you go shopping you are going in with your eyes wide open.

Too many times, we get the call about getting divorces, we have managed to save a few of course but by the time we get the call it has usually gone way too far for any sort of rescue. Stress is a killer of relationships and your health the question you have to ask yourself IS IT WORTH IT!

The mere fact is our kids are going to have to accept the fact they won't be getting a house in the western suburbs like we did the prices have gone way above them, they need to buy villa's/townhouses just get into the market.

When I started real estate nearly 27 years ago I helped a lot of first home buyers start their portfolios off and gave them the advice of if someone is going to live with you get that prenup signed, even though people said it didn't hold up in court, the mere fact there is the intention there and the judge would take that into consideration.  Now prenups are the norm.

It's sad to see and it breaks my heart every time I see that divorce happening and there is usually 1-3 kids involved and those little people are the ones that get in the middle of all that.

So before you make that huge mortgage decision do your numbers on one wage and see how you would both cope, although the reality of that happening these days is zilch as kids into daycare is almost a given.
