The appraisals that we have been doing lately with some of the Seniors, I find it to be quite sad in the respect they have to go through all "their stuff" and make a decision if they need to take the stuff or chuck it. (Its not "just stuff" to them either in most cases)
When you get to that stage in your life you have got so many thoughts, experiences in your head and you are frightened if you throw that item out you will need it tomorrow - yes and it will happen. It becomes a very stressful situation as they have furniture, items from their grand parents lots of nick nacks etc. All beautiful things but the only trouble is that their families have beautiful things too and they dont want any more "things".
Things clutter up our lives and we do collect more and more of it all the time.
My advice if you are going to make a move do it before you are 75 or make your home more adaptable to your age with hand rails in the home, stairs, get a gardener and a cleaner.
Some seniors are less fortunate that they actually have to sell their home in order to access some money (now there are some really good savers in that era). This fixation thing about keeping the health care card is the main focus instead of focusing on how many years that they may have left.
This is a very hard conversation for some people and for others it doesn't seem to phase them at, they will simply place their elderly parents in a home.
Friends of mine have taken almost a year to decide on which home to place their parents as they also dont want them to far away from them so they can visit them.
All I know is that I am glad I dont have to make that decision - both my parents have passed away.
Be kind to the Seniors this is a huge stage of their lives and you need to encourage them and help them with some decisions. I just dont believe we have enough "nice" places for them to go to.
