COUNCIL RATES ARE BACK IN THE DARK AGES

There was a letter in the West Australian from a person expressing their concerns regarding the proposed rate increase in his Shire and it went something like this:

Councils are now considering the what rate rises they are going to impose on their residents. 
The Western Australian Local Government Association has called for ratepayers to become more involved in this process.

The first fundamental of rate setting - the link of the rental value - the link of the rental value - is flawed in that it allows councils to impose rates on how much rent you would receive if you leased out the home.

Surely it would make more sense to charge for the services they provide; road and path maintenance; rubbish and reserves; which could be calculated and charged on per household basis.

Council are also very parochial and do not plan on a regional basis, duplicating facilities such as council deposit, administration buildings and sports grounds, costing ratepayers dearly for this infrastructure.

We need to have a rethink on our system of local government as it came out of Britain's medieval ages and is outdated, cost and inefficient.

Well good on you Mal because you have hit the nail on the head big time.!!

Councils need to share depots and machinery, perhaps share Council premises and keep the planners and share the rest of them it would save rate payers are huge amount of money.  It wasn't so silly to amalgamate the Councils as the costs could have been shared.

They definitely need to look at restructuring the whole way our rates are done and perhaps stop funding things that they should be making people fund raise for their desired toys or clubs that people are wanting so badly.

We need to focus on our roads, lighting, parks, rubbish removal and a few minor other things, seriously the job list of the Councils is way too long and who added them onto the list they never use to be there??

More and more people are starting to wake up to the fact that their money is being spent willy nilly and at the discretion of the Council and whatever they seem to be wanting to build or donate to.  Wake up residents you actually need to take an interest and the time is NOW because your Council is preparing the budget for next financial year.
